SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Celebrating their nineteenth year, SMMILE, a nonprofit corporation, has just announced the 2002 beneficiaries of both the Folsom Street Fair events will include: - GLBT Historical Society - Quan Yin Healing Arts Center - The Center for Caregiver Training - AIDS/HIV, Hepatitis-C Nightline - Healing Waters - Project Inform, Inc. - Out & Equal Workplace Advocate - Harvey Milk Institute - Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center - Maitri “Most people think that the Folsom Street Fair and Up Your Alley are just street fairs to celebrate leather and alternative lifestyles - what they don’t realize is that we do so much more for the San Francisco community,” remarked Bob Goldfarb, Board President of SMMILE. “We not only produce the original and largest leather celebration in the United States, we also contribute more money to lifestyle and health advocacy groups than any other San Francisco street fair. Our events are the backbone of funding for many important local nonprofits.” Proceeds from the 2001 fair season returned over $293,000 to San Francisco alternative lifestyle community nonprofit organizations making it one of the city’s largest fundraisers. In return for this significant contribution, each beneficiary group provides the primary source of volunteers required to make these events successful. For the Folsom Street Fair alone, over 450 carefully coordinated volunteers are needed to ensure a seamless all-day production of music, food, exhibits and activities for leather men, women and their friends. Attendance at the Folsom Street fair regularly surpasses 450,000 attendees making it not only the single largest San Francisco street fair, but the third largest event in all of California and the largest leather event in the world. Beneficiaries are selected by SMMILE Board review of all applications submitted from local non-profits and charitable organizations. Selection is based primarily on the impact each request will have on the greater San Francisco community, alignment with SMMILE’s core mission and the ability of SMMILE to financially accommodate each request. Selected beneficiaries can only reapply after waiting one year to ensure that the broadest group of organizations is given the opportunity to benefit. Individuals interested in volunteering on fair days should contact the beneficiary groups directly. The board extends its enthusiastic congratulations to each of the 2002 beneficiaries and strongly encourages people to put on their leather, show support for local charities and come enjoy a day of sun, fun, fetish and frolic in San Francisco.
